Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.
Also includes expanded liner notes from the original CRI LP with a newly-commissioned essay by Ned Sublette, new artwork by C. Spencer Yeh made especially for this digital re-releasea and a bonus track ("Kata") featuring solo violinist Linda Cummiskey.
Nate Wooley, editor of the music journal Sound American, has
picked fifty vital LPs from CRI’s back catalog for special treatment and re-release in digital format. These releases, rather than being a downloadable rehash of existing material, propose to contextualize the historical piece by placing it alongside the work of contemporary artists who have been influenced by the CRI original.
Among the new material is a musical response to the original. This release includes an engrossing piece by Brooklyn-based sound artist Ka Baird. They have responded to the flutes and microtonal elements of Harley Gaber’s Ludus Primus by creating a dizzying piece for synthesizer, bansuri flute, and recorder called Ludus Secondos, in loving jest and with respect to the original.

This is an unusual string quartet – with two cellists and two violinists. The lines of their instruments clash, overlap, build a quasi-resonant echo or sinusoidal forms, harmonize, but also verge upon Penderecki-style horror. Yet this is not a conceptual digression, but a complete composition that requires the listener’s attention throughout – and the result is perfect.
